“Are you real journalists? If it’s so, we can’t trust you”. This is what Shéhérazade told us this winter when we proposed her to speak up. Seen from the low-income housing projects, the media is only a machine that keeps manufacturing icons of violence. Icons that break the social fabric. Every day the rift grows wider, amidst the ever-growing of the general population towards the suburbs, the housing projects and their inhabitants.
Trying to make another voice heard, Jacky Durand, a reporter for Libération, and Samuel Bollendorff, photographer within l’Oeil Public, decided to propose a weekly chronicle in the Libération newspaper and on its website .
It was thus that for one year, from January to December 2005, the inhabitants of Grigny, a working class suburb south of Paris were given the opportunity to speak up, in front of the camera and in the newspaper’s pages.
